Released in December 2021, Mr. SID has released a complete port of the 8-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog and in our latest video we take a look at it and see how it compares to the Master System original. Click the embed below to start the video:
A fresh selection of updates have now gone live in the hardware and merchandise sections. See below for a full list of additions and direct links to each entry:
Homebrew developers NoRecess and Condense are creating a brand new port of the 8 bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog for the Amstrad GX-4000 called Sonic the Hedgehog GX. This port is based on the Game Gear version and features some really beautiful artwork:
A playable version isn’t publicly available at this time but the game’s website promises a release by the end of 2020. There are also videos of the game running under direct capture and off-screen on real hardware that you can watch by clicking here and here.
There’s something fascinating about seeing a much more advanced title being ported to a significantly underpowered system. In the right hands, these kind of ports can be an exciting experiment. What will the developer sacrifice in order to make the game run on such archaic hardware? More often than not, it’s the in-house studios who achieve the better results and with the Master System version of Streets of Rage that is definitely the case.
Ooh this feels familiar! It’s been a while since we reviewed a retro title but today we present a review of Altered Beast on Master System! This also marks our first Master System game review at SEGADriven and we hope to have more coming soon.
Anyway, enough waffling! Click the link below and get reading!
It’s been a while since we took a look back at some classic SEGA anthems and I thought it was worth featuring the below track simply because it’s been stuck in my head all morning!
Today we are taking a look at the rather lovely 8 bit ditty that is the theme to Jungle Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog for Master System and Gamer Gear. The track was composed by Yuzo Koshiro who is more famously recognised for his thumping, dance style and the Streets of Rage soundtracks.
The Sonic the Hedgehog 8 bit soundtrack showcases Yuzo Koshiro in a lighter, more poppier mood yet still manages to be a highly memorable collection of songs. Hopefully you will all be whistling the Jungle Zone theme once you’re done with this!
More Game Gear classics appear to be on their way to the 3DS eShop! Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will become available for Japanese 3DS owners on the 31st of October for 300 yen.
There is currently no word on a Western release at this time.
The SEGA Community Roundtable is back from a longer absence than usual (my bad)! This time we dicuss the best SEGA Platformer that isn’t a Sonic game. The usual rules apply, any SEGA published game qualifies as well as any game that was released on a SEGA console; Mega Drive, Dreamcast etc.
A huge thanks to our contributors who make this feature so special! There’s some brilliant writing in this feature which you should all take some time to read over; probably some of the best work I’ve seen on the roundtable!
It’s the 20th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog! You know what that means? A complete, 8-bit Sonic fan game!
Darkleo over at the Sonic Fan Games HQ forums has released Sonic Origins 2; a Sonic fan game that features more than 20 levels and is completely based on the Sonic games released for the SEGA Master System. Take a look at some screens below:
